Custom Pool and Spa Project Final Walkthrough

Building a custom pool, spa and landscape begins with an idea. It ends with you, lounging poolside, drink in your hand, gazing at your incredible finished pool and spa project.

Will it be worth it? And how do you get there? What will it look like along the way? If you’ve browsed the Artisan pools and landscape portfolio of projects, you’ve probably wondered about the end result. Many of our custom pool and spa project descriptions show you the 3D renderings that are part of the pool design process but not all of them show the finished result.

But what about the final result? Join us in revisiting a project that is one of our favorites. We call it “Via de Marcos” and it’s a wonderful modern, custom pool and spa remodel that turned out better than even we imagined.

To create – or in this case, recreate – an outdoor living space that is both beautiful and functional takes careful planning and attention to detail. For Rick Pendleton, the owner of Artisan Home Resorts, building a custom pool and spa also means developing a relationship with our clients and working closely with them to design a space that meets their needs and exceeds their expectations.

From 3D Rendering to Real Life

One of the key elements in the design process for many of our clients is the use of 3D renderings. These are computer-generated images that show what the final project will look like. However, as Rick notes, there is often a difference between the rendering and the final project.

In many cases, modifications are made to the design to match the house or to make changes requested by the client. This was the case with Via de Marcos, a modern pool remodeling project.

Early 3D rendering of the project.

The initial project included a custom pool and spa remodel, the addition of an ADU (accessory dwelling unit) which would be used as a pool house, an outdoor kitchen, a sport court and a play area for their children. We designed every element of this project (except for the main house redesign) and did the pool construction. The rest of the build was done to our specifications by other installers that we helped the homeowners select. You can see all these elements in the initial 3D renderings.

As good as these renderings are, the final result went far beyond as Rick discovered in a recent visit to the home. The clients had every detail finalized, from pool furniture to the kids’ play structure.

The entire lot layout was cleverly designed to minimize the view of neighboring houses as well as create a feeling of spaciousness while taking advantage of the incredible view. You can see it reflected in the large living room windows here.

The landscaping was the most recently completed so imagine much larger growth. The few visible rooftops will likely disappear as trees and shrubs get taller.

The walkway is created with pavers and that theme is repeated in the front of the house with the entire driveway and parking area. The cap on the planter wall is bluestone.

Custom Pool and Spa and ADU

This ADU is being used as a pool house and rec room, but could be redesigned or repurposed as a guest house. The modern look of the ADU is reflected in the home redesign as well as the straight lines of the pool and the outdoor kitchen. The home originally had a very traditional look as you can see in the original rendering here.

The home owners decided to completely update the home to a much more modern feel after seeing the ADU that we designed for them.

This image gives you a sense of the completed landscape design. As mentioned earlier, you can see a house off to the right in the second photo, but the design gives the homeowners a great sense of privacy and seclusion.

These next images show you the view from the ADU with the first looking across the lawn to the home. You can see how private the ADU is from this angle. The turf in the grassy area is real in this section, but the rest of the property including a small putting green, a bocce court and the driveway you saw earlier, is artificial for water conservation and durability.

One of the final touches in the Via de Marcos project that is truly unique is this custom-designed water feature. It reflects the modern design of the pool, home and ADU with its structured, linear lines of water. It also brings a relaxing, natural softening to the hard lines of the yard with its splashing and reflections.

The custom pumps were designed by Dan Richardi of Fountain Supply in Santa Clarita. You’ve seen his work if you’ve seen Disney’s® World of Color water show or the dancing fountains at Caesars Palace. Dan also created the plumbing for the rain curtains for another project of ours.

When Rick visited the property, he saw evidence of the enjoyment in the kicked-off flip flops and abandoned soccer ball. These visits are a satisfying conclusion to a great deal of project work, but they are also a chance for Rick to provide expert feedback on the maintenance and care of the pool. He’ll report to the homeowner if the pool maintenance is being done to his satisfaction and often recommends pool chemical and maintenance automation. A custom pool and spa project can be ruined by poor maintenance.

Rick quite often develops such a relationship with his clients that they become friends. He has enjoyed wine and cigars many times around a pool that he designed and installed. He even house-sat for a month for a pool design client. We hope he had the chance to swim in the pool he designed!

What do you think? If you were the homeowner of this property with this pool and landscape design, why would you want to fight the crowds to relax, be entertained or just play for an afternoon?
